Multiple Personality Disorder and the Power of the Mind to Heal

Split personality disorder has been an enigma to psychologists and doctors for at least 100 years. It is strange enough that a person can split their personality into at least 2 distinct personas, with some even having 100 separate personalities, changing between them at random. Each personality has their own uniqueness, name and other traits but none of the other personalities are aware of the others.

What is even more strange, and psychologists are baffled by this, is the psychological and physiological changes that occur when a different personality takes over. For instance….physical scars on the body disappear and re-appear in an instant with the dominance of different personalities.

Let’s say for instance that someone has two personalities…and for ease of understanding we’ll name them “John” and “Peter”. If John is dominant and injures himself, and the wound then heals to a scar….this would then become part of who he is. So now when Peter takes over and becomes dominant the scar disappears…only to return when John takes over again.

The same thing happens to other ailments…allergies, diseases like diabetes, colour blindness, lazy eye, and even eye colour, have all been observed to completely disappear or change when a different personality is dominant. Intelligence is also affected. If John is fluent in French, peter would not be able to speak a word of French.

Even tolerances to administered drugs are altered. If one part becomes drunk and then a different personality takes over, that new dominant part will become totally sober.

Spiritualists and alternative therapists have put forward the notion that the body and mind are inextricably linked for a long time now, but psychologists and doctors have been unwilling to see this, to the detriment of their patients. But after seeing firsthand what happens with split personalities, they are beginning to understand the mind-body link and what it means for humans and our power to heal ourselves and become the person we want to be.

‘If the mind can do this in tearing down body tissue, I think it suggests the same potential for healing,” said Dr. Braun, who directs a 10-bed psychiatric unit that uses psychotherapy, hypnosis and drugs to treat people with multiple personalities. He said he believed that the drastic physical changes seen in patients going from personality to personality could be duplicated for emotionally normal people under hypnosis….(source: New York Times).

Why do some people have split personalities?

This disorder usually begins in childhood as a defense against prolonged trauma, usually some kind abuse either mental or physical. The theory is that the mind spits in two, so that it can retreat into the other personality or personalities in times of extreme distress….and to allow the newly created part to take some of the burden of distress by sharing the pain. Another explanation, and this seems more likely… could be that the mind is creating an untouched personality knowing that the original one has been severely corrupted….much like when we partition a hard drive in case one part becomes corrupted, then we still have the other clean partition to work with. And the reason each part knows nothing of the other and its experiences, could be to protect it from the corruption and disorder of the abused part in order for that newly created part to function properly. If the new part had any memory or knowledge of the abuse the other went through, it too would become damaged.

How do these dramatic physical changes happen?

If the mind and body are linked as closely as this suggests, then it would seem that the memory, experiences and beliefs of the person are linked to every cell in the body, so that when the person changes personality all previous beliefs and so-on on are completely erased for the duration….therefore changing the whole biology, molecular structure, cell structure and chemistry of the body according to the new part.

So what does this all mean, and how can it help us.?

This is showing us how powerful the human mind is, and that our bodies and their ailments both mental and physical are not permanent, but can be changed by the power of belief and thought. If we believe something without doubt surely we can affect our own bodies at the cellular level just as people unconsciously do with multiple personalities. We could just imagine that we are healed and it would happen, we could see in our mind that the cancer has gone, and it would be done. Disease of every kind would be a thing of the past. All we need is the unwavering belief of our inner power…and the seemingly strange things that occur with people with multiple personalities should give us this belief.

There are many ways we can utilize this mind power. Through hypnosis we can gain access to the subconscious to create new beliefs using visualization and other transformation techniques.

 Hypnosis is well known to be able to create the same phenomena described in this article in emotionally normal people. Even without formal hypnosis, a person can learn powerful visualization techniques which if vivid enough can be very powerful. Visualization works because the mind cannot differentiate between mental images and real images, so if we see something vividly enough and for long enough, the body’s cell structure will begin to conform to what is being seen in the mind. Just like when a multiple personality takes over from a previous one, his cell structure and mental state is changed according to the beliefs of the new part.

Engage a Woman’s Mind Before Trying to Engage Her Body

Women love to talk and they love to be listened to. For most women, if you don’t engage her mind you won’t have much luck engaging her body. Men and women are very different here. To learn how to engage her mind you must learn how to talk to women. I’m going to try to give you a few tips and hints.

Hint #1:

When you first approach a woman to talk to her, do not use some cheesy pick up line. That might work on the rare occasion, but for most women it tells her you lack originality and you are a lazy conversationalist. Because women love conversation she won’t give you much consideration if you lack originality.

Hint #2:

Learn her name. Preferably learn her name before you even give her yours. Walk up to her and say “hi, what’s your name?” Now this may seem to lack originality but it shows the woman that you are interested in knowing at least something about her. When she gives you her name say “hi, ‘so and so’, my name is ‘such and such’. It’s nice to meet you.” Now you’ve done two things her. You’ve shown her you’re interested in her and you’ve used her name. Every woman loves it when a man will use her name. So don’t stop there. Throughout the conversation use her name. Not too much. But three or four times, spread out. This demonstrates that you are giving her your attention. You learned her name and you are using it. She’s less likely to have to worry about you using the wrong name at an inappropriate moment.

Hint #3:

Now that the names are out of the way, just what do you talk about? Well, you must find out what engages her. This means asking her questions. But do not throw 100 questions at her in rapid order. Do not have a checklist of questions and simply throw them out until you have gotten through them all. Start with something simple, some trending news item, or something about the environment around you. If you’re at a really busy bar you could comment on that. Then listen, and I mean listen to her answer. If she says something like, “ya, I love the energy of busy places” and your next response is “lets go somewhere quiet,” you’ve blown it. It shows her that you didn’t listen. If you instead reply with something like “I don’t mind busy places once in a while, but I find they can be draining” (if that’s the way you feel) then you’ve shown her that you listened and that you share a bit of the same feelings about things, or try saying something like “what is it about busy places that gives you energy?” By repeating back what she’s said she will feel like you are listening to her and actually care about her opinions.

Hint #4:

You’ve started the conversation, but where do you go from here? I mean, really, you can only talk about a busy place for so long. Now is when you can ask her what she does for a living. Listen to her answer and expand on it. If she says she’s a doctor ask her what she likes best about that job. Ask her to share an interesting moment on the job. It doesn’t matter what she does for a living you can engage her in conversation about her job by finding out more about what she does. If she’s in customer service, ask her what kinds of customers she enjoys dealing with. Ask her to share a funny story about a customer. If you want to talk to a woman with any success, you must show interest in her life.

Hint #5:

When she starts asking about you, answer her. Give her genuine information, but don’t ramble on. Don’t be negative. This is not an invitation to start complaining about your ex, your boss, your job or your kids. This is an opportunity to show her that you are a well rounded man. A man who can engage her and keep her interest. Women do not like to be bored and a man with only one topic of conversation will bore a woman to tears. If you’re big into gaming and that’s all you can talk about, unless you’re lucky enough to find a woman as big into gaming as you are, she will grow bored quickly. So have a few hobbies and interests. Maybe read a book or two. Keep up on the news, current events and trending issues. Women love gossip, so know your entertainers and what they are up to. Yes, it’s work. Yes, you may find it boring, but if you really want to learn how to talk to a woman you need to be current on the issues that most women follow.

Hint #6:

A short list of do’s and don’ts:

1. Do ask her name first

2. Do use her name in the conversation

3. Do ask about her, her job, her interests

4. Don’t forget her name

5. Don’t ramble on about yourself, especially in negatives

6. Don’t bore her with one single topic

7. Do check the trending issues and current events. Have at least a knowledge of who is in the news

8. Do ask open ended questions.

9. Don’t be pushy, if she doesn’t want to talk about something don’t push the issue

10. Do be positive, charming and funny. Women love to laugh as much as men do.

So engage a woman’s mind and you will have a chance at engaging her body. It really is that simple. For women, the attraction starts in the brain. If you can’t engage her mind you won’t engage her body. So by following the hints outlined above you will learn how to talk to women.

The Mind-Body Connection and the Symbolism of Pain

Those who are bound to traditional medicine, also known as allopathic medicine, look at the human body very differently from those in complementary or alternative medicine. Those in the allopathic field rarely view the body as a whole organism. This is demonstrated by medical doctors so specialized they lose the awareness that the human person is more than just a body. There is no longer a sense of the inter-connectedness, the inter-relationship, the oneness of the physical body. What has also been lost is the sense of oneness of consciousness within the physical body.

In Western medicine there are very few who understand the energy field in relationship to the physical body. Chiropractors know you can have a knee problem that exhibits its symptoms in the hip. The two are related and connected. Many times there are medical doctors who just work on the knee and, therefore, they miss the connection. That actually happened with my mother. Chiropractic care works on the whole skeletal structure and not just on the knee.

In addition, the mind-body perspective of health sees the emotional connection to what is happening in the physical aspect of yourself. For instance, a problem in the hip can be symbolic of the person having difficulty moving forward in his or her life. A problem in the knee can symbolize a lack of flexibility. Becoming aware of the fear of moving a different direction in life, and resolving that fear, can literally assist the hip in healing.

This symbolic relationship can be seen with any part of the body. I once worked with a woman who had tremendous pain in her shoulders. She received massages and chiropractic care and the pain went away for a time and then returned. I taught her to focus on the tense muscle and to actually converse with them. In this process, she discovered that she was “carrying” her son on her shoulders. He was having a difficult time and she was very worried about him. When she came to realize that she could support him by being there for him, but she didn’t need to carry him, she was able to literally “breathe out” the tension. She experienced instant relief.

When you are having pain in a particular part of your body, talk to it. I know it sounds silly, but give it a try. Ask it why it is hurting? You very well may find the answer to relieving the pain is held within the discomfort. You then have a choice of whether or not to make changes in your life or be in physical discomfort.

EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD AS BODY IN MOTION

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) argued systematically for materialism as a solution to the mind-body problem. Hobbes argued that everything in the world, including our thoughts and the states of our minds, can in principle be explained in terms of one thing and one thing only: matter in motion. Thoughts, for example, can be explained, he argued, as matter in motion in the brain. A perception of the world arises in a person’s brain when motion in the external world causes motion in the brain, which is then experienced as an external object, and so on. If everything can be explained as matter in motion, including the mental, then there is no good reason to suppose mind and matter are two fundamentally different kinds of things. Rather, it is more reasonable to suppose that if everything can be explained in material terms then everything is material. So argued Hobbes.

THEORY OF MOTION AS AN OPPOSITION TO ‘MIND-BODY DUALISM’

This view was an opposition to Rene Descartes’ “Mind-body dualism”. Descartes stated that a view is dualistic if it maintains that two fundamentally different kinds of things exist; a view is monistic if it posits that only one kind of thing exists. Descartes argued that mind and matter are two radically different types of things. Our conscious mind is one thing, argued Descartes, and our physical brain, which is made of matter, is another thing entirely. How did he reach this conclusion?

Descartes lived at a time when people were questioning many traditional beliefs. Setting off in search of something that could be known with absolute certainty, Descartes began his philosophy by systematically and deliberately doubting everything it is rationally possible to doubt. His plan was to see how far this would go. If we carry the process of systematic doubt as far as it can go, he reasoned, perhaps we will eventually reach beliefs that cannot be rationally doubted. If we do, then we will have reached something we can know with complete and absolute certainty. Among the propositions he eventually claimed to have proven with certainty were two pertaining to the mind-body problem:

1. The essence of matter is nothing but to be extended in space, that is, to occupy a volume of space.

2. The essence of mind is nothing but the activity of thinking.

From this he concluded:

1. Since matter and mind have differing essences, the mind is not the brain, for the brain, being made of matter, is a purely material entity, and mind is not material in nature.

2. Thus, the brain must be one thing and the mind must be another thing entirely.

3. The mind is therefore a nonmaterial or nonphysical entity.

DISCUSSION

Personally, I agree with Thomas Hobbes’ view. He stated that a matter in motion stays that way unless altered by another force, which is very true.

It is of particular interest, the way Hobbes deals with the materiality of the human subject As noted earlier, Hobbes states specifically that all things, including thoughts, are material; however, his model of cognition still predicates a strange type of division between the individual thinking subject and the rest of the material world; for, according to Hobbes we never actually experience the true materiality of the thing we sense. Hobbes both inherits and proliferates many of the standard divisions of mental function from his period. Several interesting and important observations and theories arise as Hobbes explains his model of cognition and attempts to extrapolate a theory of politics from it.

I intentionally included the ‘mind-body dualism’ as a catalyst to help see the logical explanation given by Hobbes which opposes Descartes’ confusing argument. If Descartes doubted everything, with what did he doubt? Mind? Body?

Hobbes’ view was logical and the analysis was orderly and step by step. In his argument, we see the seeds of later Skeptical thought which argued similarly that all experience is really perception and that we have known real knowledge of the material world. In Hobbes, this philosophy becomes particularly interesting because he insists, in the face of this skepticism, in maintaining that all thought is still material. It should also be noted that although his use of these terms is quite different than many other mainstream authors.

Hobbes didn’t use twisted language as he sought not to confuse anyone. This approach helps the comprehension of the theory. Also of interest to scholars of Cultural Studies and literature in particular is Hobbes’ treatment of language. Hobbes devotes an entire chapter to language and its right usage, during which he espouses an interesting model of the function of language in political society one in which metaphorical language is specifically derided.

Hobbes’ theory encompasses mind, reasoning, Fancy, Imagination, including a subsequent two part sub- division, Reason, Understanding and Will. And thus, settles any question that opposes materialism.

A Book Review on "Quantum Healing – Exploring the Frontiers of Mind-Body Medicine" by Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra is a well-renowned medical doctor trained both in India and the U.S. Currently in endocrinology, he was also the former chief of staff of New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham, Massachusetts and the founding president of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. His insights on both Western and Eastern medicine give him a more complete and well-rounded understanding on the origin of disease.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, thought nature cured disease and although modern medicine is necessary for emergency purposes, it has recently taken a 90° turn away from Hippocrates original vision. The turn has been toward drugs and surgery, but many of today’s modern diseases can be prevented with maintaining a healthy mind and body. These solutions lack long-term sustainability and lack the intelligence of the body. Understanding this requires a different approach called “quantum healing”. Deepak Chopra describes quantum healing as “the ability of one mode of consciousness (the mind) to spontaneously correct the mistakes of another consciousness (the body).”

The Quantum perspective began with Einstein, who found that nature was not always predictable and expanded upon Newton’s straight-line physics. Planck discovered the measurable nature of energy, which transforms non-matter into matter, time into space and mass into energy. Later Irish physicist, John Bell, and English astronomer, Sir Arthur Eddington, both believed in a connection between our thoughts and the universe. An invisible force turns thought (non-material) into form (material). We know neurotransmitters perfectly match up the mind with the body and DNA builds RNA, a mirror-image copy of DNA, which carries out tasks in the body. From the quantum perspective, as we think and feel, we create chemical changes in the brain that set-off a chain reaction of bodily responses. Both good and bad thoughts alter the field of intelligence and thus the body for better or for worse. In this way, our stream of consciousness is the free circulation of intelligence between the mind and body.

Ayurveda is a medical perspective whereby symptoms are controlled by attention. In Ayurveda, every part of the body correlates to certain herbs, colors, minerals and even sounds. The use of meditation and techniques such as primordial sound are implored to initiate healing. Meditation brings awareness of thought patterns while primordial sound uses one vibration to heal another. Usually Om, pronounced AUM, is the vibration or sound used to represent the collective vibration or sound of all living things and is a way to connect to your true undistorted self. Ayurveda differs from Western Medicine in that it believes the war (disease) begins inside the body. Louis Pasteur’s germ theory, the cornerstone of Western Medicine, believes the war (disease) begins outside the body. However, if even Louis Pasteur himself admitted that his controversial theory was wrong on his death bed. Don’t you think its time for us to give up his theory?

Love and compassion are our highest qualities and in this state, we cannot contradict ourselves. True love and compassion for ourselves and all other beings enables us to live in accordance with nature. One way we manifest love and compassion for all is with what we eat. We can eat in support of nature and ourselves, but the ultimate gatekeeper of health is the mind. Carcinogens, stress, chemicals, fatty and processed or sugary foods, and diets high in animal protein can all induce cancer, but ultimately the body can restore itself. In the medical field, spontaneous healings are rare and not well-understood. Such unpredictable recoveries occur at the quantum level & are beyond what modern science can measure or record, they are formless.

The wisdom of the ancient Rishis of India was recorded in the ancient Vedic texts & predated the Egyptian pyramids by thousands of years. These texts revealed many of the concept found in quantum healing and Ayurveda. The Rishis discussed three subjective states of consciousness: waking, sleeping and dreaming and a fourth, non-subjective state attained only during meditation or prayer. This fourth state is known as our most natural state and from here we can destroy our illusions and rest in our own true nature. The Rishis also believed that all beings were not restricted by time and space, but were infinite. So think and feel from the heart not with the head, think good thoughts and feel good.
